Our painting can be dated to the early 1650´s. It was Jan Asselyn who painted probably the first italianate dutch landscape, his masterful and at the same time unique Panorama (Akademie der bildenden Künste,Vienna) may have well be known to Berchem. Unlike Asselyn however, Berchem creates a sense of movement through the horsemen in the foreground.
The colouring of this landscape is characteristic of Berchem´s works around 1650. The subdued tones are enlivened by the bright red cloak of one of the horsemen and the white horse directly behind him.
